• Deservedly, much fanfare has been made about The Great Debaters, the new movie produced by Oprah Winfrey and directed by and starring Denzel Washington. Lesser known is the fact that the lead character, played by Denzel, was actually a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Years prior to the movie, the brothers of Kappa Psi made our mark on Washington, DC’s debate scene. Spearheaded by the idea of Bro. Anthony Burley, Kappa Psi began sponsoring debate tournaments at the University of the District of Columbia in the fall of 2001. Seven years later, that legacy is still being continued as the chapter prepares for this year’s Kappa Psi Urban Debate Tournament to be held on January 19th at the George Washington University.

In July, brothers of the Kappa Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity Inc. were treated to a chapter sponsored trip to the home of Col. Charles Young. Leaving Friday night, brothers piled into a 15 passenger van and made their way to Columbus, Ohio for overnight accommodations. In the morning, the group made the half hour drive from Columbus to Central State University to meet with Dr. Floyd Thomas, curator of the university’s African-American History Museum. Upon arrival, Dr. Thomas greeted the brothers and proceeded to give an hour long power point presentation on the life of the Colonel.

In honor of Brother Charles R. Drew, the brothers of Kappa Psi Chapter partnered with the Washington, DC chapter of the American Red Cross for a city-wide blood drive. Led by brother Edward Muhammad, brothers went door to door to meet neighbors and sign-up donors for the event.

The brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Kappa Psi chapter, sticking to their commitment to the community, volunteered their time to the S.H.A.R.E. Food Network during the month of February. As a food distribution volunteer the brothers loaded trucks and vans at the warehouse bay doors. The trucks and vans are owned and operated by churches, schools, and non-profit organizations that distribute food to the sick and shut-in, homeless families, and students.
